Summer days always seem to call for an extra story time, especially under that cozy tent we made with the bedcovers. When selecting books for children under age 6, Montessori educators suggest choosing reality over fantasy as they still have so much to acquire and understand from the real world around them. That makes sense to me, as much as I like talking pigs!
Our summer’s 6 favorite reads:
- Summer by Chris Demarest: I wonder how many times this season ev has heard its name “summer”. This sweet little book should give some image to that concept.
- Counting in the Garden by Kim Parker. Our cousin gifted us this book with a stuffed cat just like the “1 purring in the garden”. Not sure what ev likes more, matching the bunnies’ colors or the counting!
- My Very First Book of Shapes by Eric Carle: Find the objects to match their silhouette. A fun, interactive way to match the shapes children see all around them.
- Little Cloud by Eric Carle: We like Eric Carle. A charming tale of clouds.
- The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton: This 1943 Caldecott Award book seems a bit wordy for small ones but the details in the illustrations and the rythm of the text carry ev through each time we read.
- In the Garden with Van Gogh by Julie Merberg & Suzanne Bober. If it’s true that kids are like a sponge, why not get famous artists over with now! I like to state the title of each print before reading the text. Titles are listed inside the last panel of the book.
